In this lesson we will turn a liquid into a solid.
Supplies:
1. Empty and previously cleaned baby food jar with lids
2. Chocolate milk or plain milk
3. Empty coffee can with lids.
4. Ice
5. Rock Salt
First I will separate the class into groups. I will hand out all the supplies needed. We will pour the liquid of choice into the baby food jar and seal it tight. Next we will put it into the coffee tin and fill it with ice and rock salt. Last the lid of the coffee tin will be placed on. Each student will then take turns rolling the tin back and forth until the liquid becomes ice cream.
While the class is taking turns rolling the coffee tin I will ask them questions about what other liquids can be made into a solid.
This lesson is an experiential learning that uses the support of cooperative learning. It builds on the lesson about the phases of gas, liquid and solids. This project is learner centered and provides an experience for the students. As the students work in groups they can interact and share in the learning process. I like that the lesson is visual but also hands on and I feel that as they experience this lesson it will become part of their long term memory. My goal is to teach them for a lifetime not just a year. I want the students to experience education so they can recall the information anytime through out their lives.
